Julia Cornelia Salonina (d. 268, Mediolanum) was an Augusta, wife of Roman Emperor Gallienus and mother of Valerian II, Saloninus, and Marinianus. Julia Cornelia Salonina's origin is unknown. According to a modern theory, she was born of Greek origin in Bithynia, then part of the province of Bithynia et Pontus, Asia Minor. However, there exists some scepticism on that. She was married to Gallienus about ten years before his accession to the throne. When her husband became joint-emperor with his father Valerian in 253, Cornelia Salonina was named Augusta. Cornelia was the mother of three princes, Valerian II, Saloninus and Marinianus. Her fate, after the murder of Gallienus, during the siege of Mediolanum in 268, is unknown. It is likely that either her life was spared or the she was executed together with other members of her family, at the orders of the Senate of Rome. Her name is reported on coins with Latin legend as Cornelia Salonina; however, from the Greek coinage come the names Iulia Cornelia Salonina, Publia Licinia Cornelia Salonina, and Salonina Chrysogona (attribute that means "begotten of gold"). Roman Imperial | Gallienus | AR Antoninianus | Samosata | 255-256 | VIRTVS AVGG

Gallienus | AR Antoninianus Reference: RIC V.1 456Date: 255-256 CE Obverse: IMP C P LIC GALLIENVS P F AVG: Bust of Gallienus, radiate, draped, cuirassed, right Reverse: VIRTVS AVGG: Gallienus and Valerian, in military attire, standing face to face, one holding Victory and the other holding globe Mint: Samosata Size: 23.1 mm Weight: 4.43 grams A very nice antoninianus struck in the peculiar style of the transient Samosata mint. The Sassanid leader Shapur invaded Roman Syria in 253 and 256 CE. In both of these instances, the provincial capital and imperial mint at Antioch were besieged and sacked. Coins were desperately needed to pay for the soldiers who would ultimately repulse this Persian invasion, but with Antioch out of commission for the time being, minting responsibilities in the region shifted to the fortified city of Samosata on the north bank of the Upper Euphrates in Commagene. Interestingly, these eastern antoninianii seem to be generally struck at a higher weight standard and from a higher grade bullion than those from the western mints. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins. All coins are guaranteed to be genuine and any item found to be otherwise may be returned for a full refund. The most important thing is that you are happy with your new coin(s)! All coins are shipped in PVC-free, archival-grade coin flips and inserts made of acid-free paper Domestic (USA) shipping only, except for international shipments through eBay International Shipping program. If you purchase multiple items please message me before you pay and I will combine the shipping for you. I accept all returns within 30 calendar days upon receipt of the item. No explanation is required for the return, but it would be appreciated. Any item which has been altered from its original state may not be returned. Don't see what you're looking for? Just shoot me a message, I might have it but haven't gotten around to listing it!
