Marcus Piavonius Victorinus, emperor in the Gallic provinces from 269 to 271, succeeded Marius. Victorinus, a Gaul native and former soldier under Postumus, swiftly rose in rank, becoming co-consul in 268. After Postumus's murder in 269, Victorinus seized power in Augusta Treverorum. His main focus was preventing western provinces from submitting to the Roman Empire. Only Gaul, Germania, and Britain recognized him initially; Hispania pledged allegiance to Claudius Gothicus.
