His brief reign included campaigns against the Goths and Heruli, earning him the title Gothicus Maximus. A rare Italian-born emperor during this time, he was appointed by the Senate. As a notable statesman and claimed descendant of the famed writer Tacitus, he met his end due to the plague while on campaign.
