Theodosius I AE3 Nummus NGC Ch VF Roman Empire AD 379-395 Clear Name/Rev Chi-Rho. The baser metal of the coin is fairly dark in color with some green patina, but the devices and legends are visible and interesting. The obverse has a fairly individualized portrait and Theodosius' name legible in the legend. The reverse is the soldier-holding-down-captive motif. The soldier is holding a banner with a Chi-Rho on it, very interesting to see with the emperor on the obverse who declared Christianity the sole religion of the Empire, repressing others. NGC VF Roman AE4 of Empress Aelia Flaccilla (AD379- 388) Born in Hispania, the Roman Empress Aelia Flaccilla was the wife of Theodosius the Great and the mother of the emperors Arcadius and Honorius. Like her pious husband, she was a staunch Christian. The theologian Theodoret quoted her as saying: ”To distribute money belongs to the imperial dignity, but I offer up for the imperial dignity itself personal service to the Giver.“ The Palatium Flaccillianum of Constantiople was named for her.
