Trajan | AE Semis Reference: RIC II 649 Date: 114-117 CE Obverse: IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GERM; bust, radiate, right Reverse: DAC PARTHICO P M TR POT XX COS VI P P: S C in oak-wreath Mint: Rome Size: 20.4 mm Weight: 4.44 grams STRUCK AT ROME FOR CIRCULATION IN THE EAST. A very nice small bronze of Trajan. Both the obverse and the reverse feature attractive magenta oxidation highlights. This coin is an nice example of a scarcer denomination that would stop being produced in quantity by the end of the second century CE, with production ceasing altogether by the mid-third century CE. The reason for this is debated, but one prominent theory is that contemporary inflation rendered small change denominations obsolete. The bronze sextans (1/6 of an as) disappeared in the last century BCE and the quadrans (1/4 of an as) died out by the end of the second century CE. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins. All coins are guaranteed to be genuine and any item found to be otherwise may be returned for a full refund.
