Maximianus | AE Antoninianus Reference: RIC V.2 621 Date: 293 CE Obverse: IMP C M A MAXIMIANVS P F AVG; bust, radiate, cuirassed, right Reverse: CONCORDIA MILITVM; Maximian, draped, cuirassed, standing right, holding sceptre in right hand and receiving Victory on globe from Jupiter; Jupiter, standing left, holding sceptre. Uncertain control mark in lower center field. Mint: Antioch Size: 21.9 mm Weight: 3.95 grams Maximianus was elevated to the purple by Diocletian in 285CE; and in 293 CE they created the Tetrarchy. The Tetrarchy was a system of imperial government that placed a senior emperor (Augustus) or junior emperor (Caesar) into four different admiistrative zones throughout the Empire. This coin is likely referencing the creation of the Tetrarchy and the harmony/agreement/concord between the armies of each Tetrarch.
