VF ** Julia Mesa (Iulia Mæsa, May 7 c. 165 – August 3, 224) was a Roman lady,1 daughter of Julius Basiano, priest of the sun god El-Gabal, the tutelary god of Emesa (present-day Homs), in the province of Syria, and grandmother of the emperors Elagabalus (r. 218-222) and Alexander Severus (r. 218-235). She participated in the murder of the first to favor the ascension to the throne of the second, who years later would also be assassinated, beginning the crisis of the third century. Like her younger sister, Julia Domna, she was among the most important women who wielded the power behind the throne in the Roman Empire.
