He accompanied his childhood friend and future emperor, Galerius, on the Persian Expedition of 298. When Galerius became emperor, he entrusted Licinius with the Eastern Provinces and then elevated him to Augustus in 308. When Galerius died in 311, Licinius entered into an agreement with Maximinus and Maxentius, and became co-emperors. He then married Flavia Julia, half-sister of Constantine. Maximinus broke the agreement and attacked Licinius, but was killed in the war. Licinius and Constantine split the empire between them, east to west. In 314, a civil war erupted between them and in 324, Licinius was beaten at the Battle of Adrianople and was hanged. Constantine tried to taint the name of Licinius, portraying him as anti-Christian, but history shows he actually co-authored the Edict of Milan that gave religious freedom to the Christians in the empire.Aquileia was founded as a Roman colony in 181 BC on the Natiso River south of the Julian Alps, and was used to check the advance of the hostile Carni Tribe into Cistalpine Gaul. Roads connected Aquileia with Bolgna and Genoa. Marcus Aurelius made it the principal fortress of the empire against the barbarians of the east and north. Alaric and the Visigoths put it to siege in 401 and Atilla attacked it in 452 and the Lombards destroyed it in 590. Charlemagne incorporated it into his Frankish Empire in 774 as a Patriarchate and it grew strong for centuries until it was transferred to Venice in 1450. Today it is a much smaller town than in Roman times but is listed as the largest Roman city yet to be excavated and iis a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
