A relatively high silver content for a denomination which had been seriously debased for nearly a century by the time this coin was struck. For reasons that are not entirely clear, the Alexandrian coinage of Marcus Aurelius is relatively rare compared to both his predecessor, Antoninus Pius, and his successor (and son) Commodus. This may have something to do with the revolt of Avidius Cassius in 175 CE; but it also might be the result of prevailing economic forces within Egypt's closed monetary system.
