Marcus Clodius Pupienus Maximus was elected as co-emperor to Balbinus by the senate following the death of both Gordian I and II in the tumultuous Year of the Six Emperors. While Pupienus was tasked with leading military efforts against the usurper Maximinus Thrax, tensions quickly arose between him and Balbinus.
